MEDICAL CARE ON BOARD SHIP TRAINING

The Medical Care on Board Ship training, as outlined by the STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) Convention and Code, aims to equip designated seafarers with the advanced knowledge and skills necessary to provide effective medical care to sick or injured persons while they remain on board a vessel.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • Diagnose medical conditions: Utilizing available resources such as the "International Medical Guide for Ships" and radio medical advice to assess and identify illnesses and injuries.
  • Provide a satisfactory standard of medical care: Implementing appropriate treatment and care based on the diagnosis and available medical supplies, including administering medications, wound care, and other medical procedures.
  • Participate in coordinated medical assistance schemes: Effectively communicate with and provide necessary information to shore-based medical professionals for guidance and potential evacuation.
  • Understand and utilize onboard medical equipment and supplies: Knowing the proper use and maintenance of the medical equipment and the medications carried on board.
  • Maintain accurate medical records: Documenting assessments, treatments, and communications in accordance with relevant regulations.

Training Objectives

Upon successful completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of:
    • Basic anatomy and physiology.
    • Common shipboard illnesses and injuries.
    • Principles of disease prevention and hygiene.
    • The use of the "International Medical Guide for Ships" and other relevant medical resources.
    • Procedures for obtaining radio medical advice.
    • Regulations concerning medical stores and record-keeping.
  • Effectively assess the condition of a sick or injured person.
  • Administer appropriate first aid and medical care in a range of situations, including:
    • Managing unconscious casualties.
    • Treating shock and bleeding.
    • Caring for wounds, burns, and fractures.
    • Providing care for medical emergencies.
  • Prepare and administer medications by various routes.
  • Utilize onboard medical equipment correctly.
  • Communicate effectively with medical professionals ashore.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive medical records.
  • Understand the procedures for the transfer and evacuation of sick or injured personnel.
  • Provide basic psychological support to patients and crew.
