SEAFARERS WITH DESIGNATED SECURITY DUTIES (SDSD)

The Seafarer with Designated Security Duties (DSD) training, as defined by STCW Code Section A-VI/6 and detailed in Table A-VI/6-2, is designed for any seafarer who has been assigned specific security duties and responsibilities as outlined in the Ship Security Plan (SSP). This training goes beyond the basic security awareness required of all seafarers and equips individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively perform their designated security tasks on board.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • Maintain the conditions set out in a ship security plan: Understanding and implementing the specific security measures and procedures detailed in the SSP relevant to their assigned duties.
  • Recognize security risks and threats: Developing the ability to identify potential security breaches, threats, and suspicious activities on board and in the port environment. This includes understanding current security threats and patterns.
  • Undertake regular security inspections of the ship: Conducting thorough inspections of designated areas to ensure security measures are in place and functioning correctly.
  • Properly use security equipment and systems: Gaining proficiency in the operation, testing, calibration, and at-sea maintenance of any security equipment and systems the seafarer is responsible for.
  • Implement security procedures: Understanding and following established procedures for controlling access to the ship, handling cargo and stores, and managing restricted areas.
  • Respond to security incidents: Knowing how to react appropriately in the event of a security threat or breach, following emergency procedures and contingency plans.
  • Contribute to security-related communications: Understanding and effectively communicating security-related information according to established protocols.
  • Recognize techniques used to circumvent security measures: Being aware of methods that could be used to bypass security procedures and equipment.
  • Understand methods of physical searches: Comprehending the techniques for conducting physical searches of persons, personal effects, baggage, cargo, and ship stores.

TRAINING OBJECTIVES :

Upon successful completion of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
    • Relevant international and national maritime security regulations and conventions (e.g., SOLAS Chapter XI-2, ISPS Code, STCW Code Section A-VI/6).
    • The meaning and implications of different security levels.
    • The Ship Security Plan and their specific duties and responsibilities within it.
    • Potential security threats and vulnerabilities to ships and ports.
    • Methods for recognizing and detecting weapons, dangerous substances, and devices.
    • Characteristics and behavioral patterns of persons who are likely to threaten security.
    • Techniques used to circumvent security 1 measures.  
    • Emergency procedures and contingency plans related to security incidents.
    • Security-related communication protocols.
    • The operation, testing, and maintenance of onboard security equipment and systems.
    • Methods for conducting security inspections and physical searches.
  • Perform assigned security duties and responsibilities effectively, including:
    • Maintaining security in accordance with the SSP.
    • Conducting security inspections and reporting findings.
    • Operating and maintaining security equipment.
    • Controlling access to the ship and restricted areas.
    • Monitoring the ship and its surroundings for security threats.
    • Responding to security incidents according to established procedures.
    • Communicating security-related information effectively.
